ASCII represents American Standard Code for Information Interchange.

ASCII is an abbreviation for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is an encoding technique for characters. This technique is used to encode the data in computers, communicating devices and other equipments which use text. ASCII is the most common way of encoding the characters. But in December 2007 UTF-8 was launched, which surpassed ASCII. ASCII codes were developed from telegraphic codes. It was first developed in 1960 and was upgraded till 1986.

All the English alphabets from A to Z (upper case letters), a to z (lower case letters) and the numbers 0 to 9 are encoded in ASCII code. Also the punctuation symbols and control codes are encoded. ASCII has 128 encoded characters which include 33 non printing control characters and 96 printable characters including the space.
